Dear Parents,

WHITBY 2008

Monday September 29th – Friday October 3rd 2008

Following another most successful Y6 residential trip to Whitby and the North York Moors last October, we are now planning the Autumn 2008 Whitby journey, and invite your child to take part.

The provisional programme for the five days is as follows :

Monday September 29th : Leave school at 8.15 a.m. travel by coach to York, stopping for a break on the way.  Spend the afternoon in York at York Minster and the Minster Education Centre, where we will learn about the history of York and all about the beautiful Minster. We will leave York late afternoon to arrive in Whitby at 6.00 p.m.  We will go straight to the Youth Hostel, which will be our base for the five days, be allocated rooms, have dinner, then in the evening we will go out into Whitby to explore this fascinating old fishing port.

Tuesday 30th:  We will spend the morning in the town completing some studies of the town’s history and geography, visit St. Mary’s Church, and then spend the afternoon at Robin Hood’s Bay on beach and coastal work, exploring the rock pools and hunting for fossils. The evening will be spent with Mr. Collett who will take us on a guided tour of the fascinating and interesting parts of Whitby, and tell us about the pirates, ghosts, characters and strange happenings of the past!!

Wednesday October 1st : This day will be spent on the moors, firstly visiting the NYM Centre at Danby for a lecture about life on the moors, its wildlife and its specialness, followed by a session doing a river study. This links in well with our work in geography this year. After lunch at Danby Beacon, we will walk over the moors to Goathland Station where with luck and good timing we will watch the steam trains go past!  The evening will be spent in the hostel.

Thursday 2nd : We go to Eden Camp, the Second World War Museum at Malton.  (This links in well with our curriculum work in history that will be completed during the Autumn Term and will consolidate much of their learning on this topic), and is a fascinating place.  We’ll spend most of the day there, followed by an evening in the hostel on a “How much have we learnt” quiz.

Friday 3rd : We leave Whitby at lunchtime after our shopping session and our lunch of Whitby fish and chips from the Magpie Cafe, drive to York to visit the National Railway Museum (of course) for the afternoon.  At the museum we will have time in the inter-active centre, a ride on the narrow gauge railway, a talk about the Flying Scotsman and a wander round the museum to see some of the wonderful exhibits such as Queen Victoria’ royal train, Mallard (the fastest steam locomotive in the world, etc.) We then drive home to Minchinhampton, arriving at about 9.30 p.m.

Accommodation : We will be staying in Whitby Youth Hostel, situated in the grounds of Whitby Abbey at the top of East Cliff, very conveniently close to Church Stairs and the old town area of Whitby.  We will probably be sharing the youth hostel with another primary school, sleeping in rooms with their own facilities in groups of four.  There is a large lounge which we will use for relaxation and as a work room, and the standard of meals is excellent.  The new youth hostel is larger than the old one we stayed in last year and has a greater range of, and better facilities than the old hostel.  We stayed there last year and it will be quite a treat to stay there once again

Travel : We will hire a coach from Eagle Line Travel and our driver will be Matt who has taken us during the last three years.  Keeping the coach all week is very helpful especially if the weather demands that we change our schedule from day to day.

Staffing : Depending on the number of pupils who go, we will staff the group on a one adult to ten children, e.g. 35 children = 4 adults.  Details of staffing will be available nearer the date of the journey.

Cost : The cost remains at £175.  This can be paid in instalments as you wish but we will require a deposit of £25 to book a place, then a further £50 before Easter then the balance paid before the end of the summer term.  A payment card will be issued.  Please keep this safe  and return it with your payments.

Please contact me if you have any questions or if you require any further details. There is a display of photographs outside my office if you would like to see photos of some of the week’s activities.

Yours sincerely,
