February 1st 2008,

Dear Parents,

Newsletter 2008/4

Cake Sale in aid of Sightsavers : We had an Assembly on Tuesday about the plight of blind children in the countries in the developing world and how it is possible to save children’s sight.  We learnt how tablets to stop river blindness cost 10p each and given once a year can stop children and parents from losing their sight; an operation on a child can remove cataracts as long as the he or she is below 7 years old (after that age the brain cannot learn to see) and a simple operation can stop the agony of trachoma where the eyelashes turn inwards and damage the eye.  Our children were very moved by what they saw on the DVD, and being very keen to raise money for Sightsavers have organised a cake sale. If you or your children would like to make and bring in cakes on Thursday February 7th that will help to make the sale a great success and help drive blindness out of so many children’s lives.

Thank you to the PTA for funding the cost of the new interactive whiteboard and digital projector in Mrs. Bugg’s class.  This replaces the IWB that was the first one we had in the school and was in dire need of replacement.

Clerk to the Governors: Following Mrs. Combe’s resignation from the post of Clerk to the school Governors, we are now looking for someone to replace her.  The post carries a small salary and is not demanding, but requires attendance at Governors’ meetings at 4.30 p.m. or 7.30 p.m. twice a term and the facility to e-mail and write letters, minutes and agendas. Please contact me if you are interested.

Parents’ Evenings:The appointment  sheets .will be posted in the usual places on Monday morning.

The Big Schools’ Bird Watch:  Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Dyer and Mrs. Aurelius would like to say a big “thank you” to all the enthusiastic  bird watchers who took part in the “Big Schools’ Bird Watch” on Wednesday.  They saw seven different species of birds (robin, great tit, blue tit, dunnock, chaffinch, blackbird and jackdaw). The results have been sent to the RSPB, who are collecting the results from schools all over Britain.

Young Voices: The Minchinhampton Nkokoto Group has very kindly told me that because it is not going to be possible for me to take the Young Voices Choir to their African Evening on March 1st , they will invite us to sing on another occasion later in the year. Thank you to those children who offered to come.

PTA Valentine’s Disco with Magic Box Disco- Friday 15th February 5.45 - 6.45 p.m for KS1 children, 7.00 – 8.15 p.m for KS2 children.  £1 admission.  I suggest 50p maximum spending money for sweets, crisps, etc.

Art Workshops: There are art workshops being organised at the Paganhill Maypole Hall over half term – details are on the noticeboard.

Next Tuesday 5th February: COFFEE, CLOTHES AND CARDS. 8.45am School Hall.  Please come along for a sale of nearly-new uniform, Phoenix cards and free coffee and biscuits. If you have any used, outgrown uniform or PE kit in a good sellable condition, please hand it into the office.  Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

R.J.Harris
