14 Jun 2008 - Science Week
Science Week at Minchinhampton School
The children tell you about our Science Week
Reception : We had Randall telling us about his book “The Plant Earth”. We talked about it. Mrs. Sutton from the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust brought in her compost bin – we got to learn a lot about worms. We put on our waterproof gear and in pouring rain we went out on a mini-beast hunt. Then we looked at our findings through a microscope that was linked to the interactive whiteboard so everyone could see the pictures. We had mini-beast songs with Mrs. Hale and we cooked gingerbread men and we had lots of fun with different magnets. We also went to Tetbury Leisure Centre for some activities.
Class 1H : We liked the Mad Science Assembly and bouncing balls to see which bounced the highest, and collecting mini-beasts in the rain! We had a wonderful time at Tetbury Leisure Centre where we used up lots of energy. We had a magician called Ace of Diamonds who did a lot of tricks which involved science. We had a very messy session with gloop (cornflour and water) and salt dough.
Class 1S : We washed lots of things and found out which fabric dried the quickest and found out they dried best hanging on the line. We loved making boats and seeing if they floated. We really liked trying to make plasticine float. We all ate bread rolls that we cooked. It was amazing how big the dough got! We loved our helicopters made from paper. We loved blowing paint to make pictures. We learnt how to count our pulse and measured how much we had grown. We had a lovely trip to Plump Hill when we took our teddies and found them things to eat and drink, and built them a house in the woods.
Class 1A : We loved the Assembly with Lightning Rod on Monday. His leaf blower was very funny when he blew it into his face. We had a great time at @Bristol on Tuesday. Our favourite Science activities were the football games (it was to get the football in the corners to score a goal), the funny mirrors, the water machine, the musical instruments, the tag game, the gloop experiments, the huge bubble blower, the hot air balloon and the basketball game. On other days, we made parachutes, our own bubble blowers, sycamore spinners, rocket launchers, amazing magnetic games and we used the science zone in ICT. We love science!
Class 1/2H:
Science Week started off with a real ‘BANG’ last week, as Lightning Rod the Mad Scientist began with a cool assembly. Our class topic for the week was ‘Forces’, and each day we investigated a different area. Monday continued with the nice smells of frothy yeast and iced buns (Yummy!). We also had a great time seeing how magnets worked and planning and making our own magnet games.
Tuesday took us on a trip to @ Bristol. It was really cool there as we learnt so much. Our favourites were the Hamster Wheel, the Shadow Machine and Wi style basketball. Other events during the week included ‘Bubble Bombs’, parachutes, aeroplanes and investigating friction with car surfaces, shoes and oily jelly (No we didn’t eat it!).
Our final highlight was exploding vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, warm water and red paint from a volcano. First the pretend lava looked like frothy coffee, but then it turned red after a while. It was so very exciting.
All in all it had been one busy, busy, fun week! What’s happening next year Mr Harris.
Class 2P : Last week we had an interesting and fun science week. On Monday, we set up some experiments about what insects like to eat. We wrote up our results every day. On Tuesday we made paper aeroplanes and paper boats. We watched how they went and with the boats we watched to see how much weight they took. We went on a school trip to the Science Festival in Cheltenham. We saw some snakes on stage, some mad science and we had some time in the science zone. On Thursday we melted chocolate over candles and then mixed them with rice crispies to eat. On Friday we made bubble bombs and gloop. Some of the bombs exploded and some of them didn’t! And that’s what we did in Science Week!!
Class 2N : We had a great Science Week making moving models. We designed and made jumping beans, zoetropes and monsters in a box. We also had explosive fun when we created our very own bubble bombs using vinegar and baking powder. Another favourite activity we did was the study of liquids and solids, melting chocolate to make Chocolate Crispie Surprise. The trip to Cheltenham to see “Snakes on Stage” and “Mad Science” was a super day that we all enjoyed. We liked the talking robot. Can we have another Science week please?!
Y5/6 During Science Week we did a variety of activities. We had loads of experiments set up for us to do on Wednesday, ranging from chromatography to testing acids and alkaline. To add to all the excitement we went to Plump Hill Environmental Centre to study pond life. We made a picture book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” – the butterfly was made using chromatology. We grew crystals by using saturated solutions, we had a visiting speaker who talked to us about the body, and Mrs. Blundell did some eggciting activities – “Ready, Eggy, Go”. We made (and tasted!) savoury and sweet foods that used eggs as an ingredient. We also had a circus of 13 different science activities taking place in our classrooms. Overall it was an excellent week!
